About Tokyo

Tokyo is the capital city of Japan. Until 1868 it was named Edo, but as it became the capital the name changed to Tokyo. Tokyo means "Eastern capital" and is located at the east coast, east of the old capital Kyoto - hence Tokyo.

When talking about Tokyo one can talk about Tokyo the city, Tokyo the prefecture, or Tokyo the metropolitan. Tokyo the city existed until 1943. The 23 wards that were the old city are, with a population of more than 8 million, still regarded as the largest city in Japan. Tokyo prefecture has a population of more than 12 million. Tokyo metropolitan consists of the four neighboring prefectures of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba with a population of more than 33 million.

It is a fascinating and dynamic capital with a wide range of activities such as restaurants, music shows, Tokyo motor show, electronic commerce, temples, sumo wrestling. A mix of ultra-modern and old culture. A visit is recommended.
