Kawailoa Bay

On our way to the north this morning we had a change of mind. The weather forecast for the north was not so good. We decided to go to Gillin’s beach instead. It is just a dirt road away from where we stay. Ok, a Hyatt, a golf course, and a dirt road away. Arriving at Gillin’s beach we changed our mind again and continued on the dirt road for another few hundred meters and ended up at the Kawailoa bay.

At first it looked like a deserted beach with not so good possibilities to swim. However, it turned out to be quite a nice beach. Big with not so many visitors and quite nice swimming. Much better than at Gillin’s beach.

During the lunch we had a visit by a red bird. It wanted to have some chips. When it got some it just grabbed it and flew away. After a while he was back again wanting more.

After the lunch we had a walk along the beach and on a trail leading away from the beach. It was a beautiful walk along rocks, cliffs, beautiful scenery, and splashes of water.

It was really beautiful scenery. And it was the first time we went here.

We didn’t really want to return to the beach…

When we got tired to the Kawailoa bay we went to Poipu just to make sure there were no Hawaiian Monk seals there. We were lucky. One was sleeping at the Brennecke’s beach next to Poipu beach. There were also several sea turtle in the water.

The weather forecast for the north was bad again. Mostly clouded and rain. So we stayed in the south again. The really great beaches here is Poipu, Kiahuna, and Gillin’s beach, but Gillin’s beach is not so good for swimming as the other. We went to Kiahuna again. And we were lucky. Shortly after we arrived so did a Hawaiian Monk Seal. And although we have been to Kiahuna so many times now we have never seen a Monk seal here.

Since there is no life guard at Kiahuna it took a while to put up rope to fence the seal from people. Actually it was not really necessary since most people care for the Monk seals and don’t want to disturb them. But there is always exceptions. Today some guy from east Europe tried to touch the seal. So I guess the ropes were needed anyway.

The Monk seal spend the whole day on the beach. Only moving to get a better position on the beach. When we left around 5 pm the seal was still sleeping in the sand. I think it doesn’t matter how many times you see wild (well, not crazy wild but you know what I mean) animals, they will always be fascinating to watch.

After the beach we went to the grocery store to buy dinner and breakfast. Also some wine and Sobe. Then home to relax and prepare dinner. Tonight it was herb chicken with salad.

Shopping in Lihue and Poipu Beach

Today was a day off from the beach. Instead we went to Lihue for some shopping at Hilo Hattie, Wal-Mart, and Macy’s. Then we went to the Lydgate Beach Park on the east coast. It was windy, cloudy, and quite cold. so we sat in the car while having lunch.

After lunch we decided to go back south and do some more shopping at the Poipu Shopping Center. I bought a new pair of swim shorts. Maybe if you are lucky you will see them on future photos at this blog.

But for the afternoon I used my old shorts when we rested at the Poipu beach. It was not cold but not really hot either. It was kind of perfect temperature for just relaxing and sleeping in the sand. Watching surfers in the big waves, 6-10 (2-3 m) feet on the south shore. Tomorrow the forecast was 6-10 feet with a warning that sometimes the double may occur. I think Kiahuna can be really fun tomorrow.

Another Visit to Kiahuna Beach

When we arrived at the Kiahuna beach this morning we were welcomed by big waves. Although it was quite windy it was still hot enough to have many reasons to go into the water and play in the big waves. And so we did… Many times. Afterwards we had sand everywhere, and big smiles on our faces.

We stayed at the beach past 5 pm to return directly to our room. There we prepared left overs from the other day. We had Indian curry ad watched American idol. Chie’s favorite is Jason Castro, a young boy with dreadlocks and good voice. Tonight Paula Abdul made a review of his second song before he even sung it. Might be that she is a fortune teller, just very confused, or there is something funky going on.

Poipu Beach

Our plan to go to Ke’e beach, the last (or maybe the first?) beach on the North Shore was spoiled as the remote key for the car stopped working. And we could not find the button to open the trunk from the inside. So we went to the car rental office and got the spare key… And found out how to open the trunk from the inside. Too late now.

Instead of going North we went to Borders bookshop, Longs Drugs, and to Big Save in Koloa. We also stopped by the post office in Lihue to buy stamps and post some post cards.

After that it was time to hit the beach. But not North. It is an hours ride at least. Since most of the morning was already gone and we had groceries in the car we first went home before going to a beach close by, Poipu beach.

Despite our trouble with the car we were lucky. On the beach was a giant sea turtle sun bathing (on the same spot as the Monk seals some days ago). And a few in the water eating as well. It is so fun to see them. So beautiful and gracious in the water and so clumsy and slow on land.

We spent the whole afternoon until almost 6 pm before returning home. Where we had bacon and tomato sauce pasta with salad for dinner.
